Can a GP diagnose ADHD in NSW?

From late October 2026, GPs who have completed the NSW endorsement training can assess and diagnose ADHD. Other GPs continue to work under the earlier arrangements.

What can an endorsed GP prescribe?

An endorsed GP can start psychostimulant medication for ADHD and adjust it over time, within NSW rules and their clinical judgement. Some situations still call for specialist input.

Does a GP replace a psychiatrist?

No. Psychiatrists remain important for complex presentations, diagnostic uncertainty and co-occurring conditions. GP-led care works best alongside them.

What happens after diagnosis?

The GP and the person agree a treatment plan, which may or may not include medication, followed by regular reviews of how treatment is working, physical health and wellbeing.
